“勤”，即勤劳、勤俭、勤奋、勤思。韩愈《进学解》中说：“业精于勤，荒于嬉”。魏元光院长提出：勤者，辛勤劳动，刻苦钻研。勤是治学之基，河工人要培养勤奋好学、吃苦耐劳的精神，只有这样才能成为对社会做出贡献的有用之才。
“慎”，即慎思、慎言、慎行。《礼记•中庸》中说：“慎思之，明辨之”。魏元光院长提出：慎者，精心作业，精心操作。慎是立身之本。河工人要用心思考，审慎求真，尊重事实，明辨是非，遵循规律，科学创新。
“公”，即公平、公正、公开。《礼记》中说：“大道之行也，天下为公。”魏元光院长提出：公者，大公无私，奉公守法。公是治校之道。河工人要培养公平、公正的正义感和强烈的社会责任感，在工作和学习中要做到公道、正派、诚实守信。
“忠”，即忠心、忠实、忠诚。《左传》中说：“临患不忘国，忠也。”“忠”就是一种对国家、对民族、对社会、对他人的责任感和使命感。魏元光院长提出，忠者，热爱祖国，敬业尽职。忠是立业之根。河工人要培养矢志不渝、坚贞不屈的精神和强烈的社会责任感，永远保持对祖国、对人民、对母校的热爱与忠诚，担负起国家强盛和民族复兴的历史责任。
University Characteristic
The "study" in "work and study" mainly refers to the higher engineering education system with the fundamental task of the cultivation of innovative talents. On the basis of inheriting the excellent school-running tradition of combining theory and practice, we strive to build an organic link between engineering education and economic construction, close integration of theoretical teaching and practical training, and the cultivation of high-quality innovative talents that promote mutual promotion of scientific research and personnel training. The system realizes the integration, interaction and unity of the two elements of “work” and “study” at a higher level and in a broader space.
“工学并举”中的“学”主要是指以创新人才培养为根本任务的高等工程教育体系，“工”主要是指以经济建设特别是以工业发展为主体的高等工程教育实践环境；“工学并举”就是在继承理论与实践相结合培养人才的优良办学传统基础上，努力构建工程教育与经济建设有机联系、理论教学与实践训练紧密结合、科学研究与人才培养相互促进的高素质创新人才培养体系，实现“工”与“学”两个要素在更高层次上和更广阔空间中的融合、互动与统一。
